Amir Berbić collaboration featured in the New York Times
Amir Berbić, Professor and Chair of UIC Graphic Design, recently collaborated with Michael Rakowitz on a public art project in Cleveland titled “A Color Removed.” An installation by Rakowitz, an Iraqi-American artist based in Chicago, held at Spaces Gallery from July 14–September 30, asks the question, Can you remove a color—and a symbol of safety—from an entire city?
Rakowitz worked with Berbić to create collection bins that are now placed at institutions around the city. Branded in red and yellow, the bins invite viewers to donate orange objects, which make up the physical installation. The exhibition of orange objects is a tribute to Tamir Rice, the 12-year-old boy who was playing with a pellet gun when he was fatally shot by a Cleveland police officer in 2014.
A story about the project written by Jillian Steinhauer was featured in the New York Times on Sunday, July 29, 2018.
