Master of Design Students Recognized in UIC Image of Research Competition

Michaela Tures (MDes, Graphic Design) received third place in UIC's Image of Research competition. Two additional students were finalists: Juhr Selamet (MDes, Graphic Design) and Yannis Dimoulis (MDes, Industrial Design).

 

Combining her interests in music and design, Tures explored the symbols of western music notation. In this example of her thesis research, Tures changes and distorts the symbols of notation to emphasize different elements of the composition, both visual and auditory. The piece analyzes Haydn’s Symphony No. 94, more commonly know as the Surprise Symphony. When the various elements of the layered composition are changed, it becomes less readable and more expressive. The idea is to be able to understand parts of the music without necessarily being able to read the notes.

 

The Image of Research is an annual interdisciplinary competition and exhibition organized by the Graduate College and University Library to showcase the breadth and diversity of research at UIC. Each year, students enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program at UIC are invited to submit an image they created along with a brief précis of how the image relates to the student’s overall research.
